Since starting Spyderco, we have been told that our knives are different, peculiar, and even out there. This is all true. By thinking beyond the established knife industry barriers, we were able to introduce new and radical innovations to the knife culture, including one-hand opening, serrations on a folder, and a clip to attach a knife to a pocket. Our motivation for going into business was not to rake in a mountain of dough, but rather to indulge our passion for creating knives.
Spyderco is definitely out of the norm in the knife industry when it comes to our dedication to researching and developing fresh, improved, and better-performing materials, with function and reliability being the key priorities. Someone once said to Sal Glesser, Spyderco's owner, "You must design in the dark because your knives look so strange." This statement is also true. Our recognizable appearance is the result of designing ergonomic functional tools rather than applying cosmetic embellishments to a pocketknife. While our knives may look curious or homely, they will never be called unusable or undependable.
Making knives that consistently deliver reliable high-performance requires an ongoing commitment to testing. In our million-dollar testing facility, we examine edge retention with a CATRA machine, look for rust development with Q-FOG, and check the force needed to open and close a knife. We also repeatedly test for stress, wear, optimal heat-treating, and actively search for higher-quality, performance-enhancing steels and materials.
As a customer, you may not think about or care much about this testing process, but it allows us to put forth a promise. When you purchase a Spyderco, you are buying a high-quality, reliable cutting tool designed and manufactured for peak performance and ergonomic comfort. Those who know carry Spyderco, made using the highest-quality materials and tested for quality and durability.
Spyderco is the most trusted name in your cutlery needs, offering features such as a 4-way clip, pinned construction, phosphor bronze washers, the David Boye Dent, an enlarged opening hole, spine jimping, and a hollow-ground blade. The stainless handle surface is also suitable for engraving and etching, adding a personalized touch to your Spyderco knife.
